This has always been and remains one of my all-time favorite Beatle's songs. For one thing, it is a thing of simple beauty. If ever there was proof that music does not need to be complicated to be great, this is it! The use of the solo cello was unheard of at the time, but it is absolutely perfect here.
The lyrics perfectly capture the emotion of wistful sadness that comes from having lost things that were so valuable but have now escaped our grasp - particularly when we can't figure out why it has happened. ("Why she had to go - I don't know, she wouldn't say") I really appreciated Katy Perry's rendition of this on the 50th anniversary special this week - she looked at the end like she was really going to cry. It was perfect for the moment and was totally appropriate for the emotion of the song.
