Tina Turner had spent the first part of her life and her career in the huge shadow of her husband, Ike. Although she had been the out front vocalist for their group on such iconic hits as Proud Mary, it was not until years later that the general public learned of the abuse and control that Ike had maintained over her life during those years of initial stardom. Even after their divorce, it took quite a few years for Tina to establish herself as an artist in her own right.
This song, as well as the album from which it came Private Dancer, marked her first huge breakthrough into the spotlight and from that point on she never looked back. The opening interplay between the bass and the synthesized "flute" sound provided the hook that kept and held your attention. When her movie career took off the following year because of her part in Mel Gibson's film Mad Max:Beyond the Thunderdome, the question finally became "who was that guitar player that Tina Turner used to be married to?"
