It is interesting how bluegrass has really started making a comeback in recent years. My three children (ages 27-32) have all really gotten into it in recent years. A lot of it came from the popularity of the movie O brother, where art thou? and its outstanding bluegrass soundtrack. This is a bit of a repeat since the mini-boom in bluegrass popularity came in the '70s due to Deliverance. As a result of that movie every guitar player tried to learn to play Dueling Banjos.
I had not heard this particular song before, but it clearly is classic high energy bluegrass. The banjo driving the rhythm with 16th note finger picking is the dead giveaway. That combined with the hillbilly twang on the vocals and the somewhat strained high harmony part definitely gives the feeling of being up in "the holler" in Tennessee or West Virginia. The lyrics fit a strophic verse/chorus pattern and tell a story of love lost and found. The fiddle in the last section also adds a nice touch!
