The Ronettes are a great example of the girl group trend which really came into its own in the late '50s and early '60s. These groups were always dressed in matching cute little dresses and had their hair all done in similar fashion. Even the Supremes in their early days were made to fit into this stereotypical look and it was not until Diana Ross began to take more charge of her own image and career that some of that began to change.
One of the notable things about "Be my baby" is the extensive use of percussion in the intro and the fadeout. There had been other times where this had been done, but it was rare - especially for the girl groups. It does use the standard girl trio technique of one soloist out front with the other two members behind doing background vocals that echo the lead lyrics combined with oooohs. The chord structures here have moved beyond the basic I-IV-V of the blues tradition and added some secondary dominant type progressions - somewhat daring at the time!
