Stevie Wonder was an absolute sensation in the early '70s. Superstition was his first major hit after he had negotiated full control of his music selection in his new contract with Motown. I love the whole Motown style, but here Stevie is able to transcend the somewhat formulaic limitations that had developed by this time. This was not your daddy's Motown!
The opening riff just keeps going and going and gives a real unity to the entire song. I also have always loved the horn parts, which bring a distinctive and unique element to the song. As the text notes, Stevie takes old elements of blues and combines them with new instrumentation (synthesizers) and truly makes something new out of the combination.
