Continuing the Beatles tribute week, we come to A Hard Days Night. This always struck me as being representative of their "cheeky" side. Adults at the time tended to view the lads as being a bit "insolent" - some of that was in response to John Lennon's foolish boast that they were "bigger than Jesus Christ". Hard Days Night seemed to more than just a few of the adults I knew as being a little too approving of those who have been referred to in recent years as "slackers" - the lyrics complaining about "working like a dog" as if it was a bad thing and "sleeping like a log" as a good thing! They were definitely starting to move into the more rebellious phase that would later come into full flower in some of the psychadelic songs of the Sgt. Pepper album - Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, I get by with a little help from my friends, etc.
This one isn't quite there yet - it is still in the vein of the normal complaint of the man who has to work a bit harder than he might like, but is not yet ready to chuck it all. It still retains the lighter pop feel with a slight rock edge, but nothing really too hard - yet!
