And the 12 bar blues continues its further development, this time in the hands of the "hardest working man in show business." I always loved James Brown because of the incredible energy he brought to every performance! I also have always loved the "bark" of a good bari sax player as is heard here and later featured by Sly Stone as well as Tower of Power. That combined with a killer horn section and the iconic guitar riff at the end of each verse definitely keeps your attention.
As with many of James Brown's songs, the whole point of this one is to get you up on your feet and dancing. He underlines that with the lyrics here which go through a roll call of many of the dance fads that came and went during this time period - the jerk, the fly, the monkey, the mashed potato, etc. The short rhyming couplets also prefigure some of the trends that later would develop into rap.
