This was the song that really launched Donna Summer's career and put her at the forefront of the disco craze. It was considered quite raunchy at the time - with the whispers and moans that it contained being quite scandalous to many. It helped earn her the title of "Queen of Disco" as well as some less flattering appellations from those who weren't thrilled with its suggestiveness.
The song is quite long. (17 minutes) The Top 40 stations originally wouldn't play it due to its length until a shortened version was created to appeal to that market. The original was specifically targeted to the dance floors of discos where the patrons demanded long, uninterrupted songs so that they could keep dancing without stopping. The heavy driving (and quite repetitive) beat became one of the defining features of disco music.
