This is an extremely entertaining call and response between the reeds and the brass. The constantly shifting back and forth definitely keeps things interesting. The constantly driving walking bass helps keep things moving. It is also interesting to see the development of the swing style of the coming big band era.
The alternating solos between saxophone and trumpet also provide the opportunity to shift the backgrounds for added variety. I also notice the use of "punches" by the brass as a response to the calls from the reeds - again a prominent characteristic of big band swing style - as is the frequent use of soli playing by an entire section.
